SahiPlate deliberately avoids calorie-counting jargon, but a few words come up again and again — in verdicts, plans, the grocery list and our policies. Here is what each of them means.
Plate & portion language
- Katorialso: small steel bowl
- The standard Indian serving bowl we use as a portion unit. One katori is roughly 150 ml — about one modest serving of dal, sabzi, curd or kheer. We describe portions in katoris and rotis instead of grams so you can eyeball them on a real thali.
- Thali
- A full plate made of several small components — roti or rice, dal, one or two sabzis, curd, salad and a pickle. SahiPlate reads a thali as a whole plate, not as separate logged items.
- Plate size
- Your personal baseline for how much food a normal meal is for you. It is set during onboarding and used to scale every portion suggestion, so 'two katoris' means two of your katoris.
- Portion tier
- A simple label — light, standard or heavy — that we attach to a meal instead of a calorie number. It tells you whether the plate is bigger or smaller than your usual baseline.
- Balanced plate
- A plate with a visible protein, a vegetable, a controlled carb portion and something fermented or fresh. It is the target SahiPlate nudges you towards, not a rigid rule.
Coaching & verdicts
- Verdict
- The one-line judgement your coach gives a meal — for example 'solid choice', 'heavy on carbs' or 'add a protein'. A verdict is guidance, never a score or a grade.
- Swap
- A culturally familiar alternative suggested in place of an ingredient or dish — millet roti for maida naan, curd for cream, roasted chana for fried namkeen. Swaps respect your diet rules and your cuisine.
- No-listalso: avoid list
- The foods you never want suggested — allergies, religious restrictions, dislikes or medical avoidances. SahiPlate enforces the no-list across meal plans, swaps and the grocery list.
- Next step
- The single action shown after a check-in — cook this, order that, or drink water and walk. One step at a time is deliberate: it is what makes the habit stick.
- Streak
- The number of consecutive days you have checked in at least once. Streaks measure showing up, not eating perfectly.
- Check-in
- Logging a meal by photo, voice or search. A check-in is what gives the coach context; it is not calorie tracking.
Nutrition terms we use
- Macros
- Protein, carbohydrate and fat — the three nutrients that make up the bulk of a meal. We show macro balance qualitatively (enough protein? too many carbs?) rather than as numbers to hit.
- Protein anchor
- The protein element that holds a plate together — dal, rajma, paneer, curd, eggs, chicken or fish. Meals without one tend to leave you hungry sooner.
- Added sugar
- Sugar, jaggery, syrups and sweeteners added during cooking or processing, as opposed to sugar naturally present in fruit or milk. We flag added sugar because it is the most common hidden load in Indian snacks and drinks.
- Glycaemic loadalso: GI
- A rough measure of how quickly and how much a food raises blood sugar, accounting for portion size. White rice, maida and sweets are high; millets, whole dals and vegetables are lower.
- Fibre
- The indigestible part of plants — whole dals, vegetables, millets, fruit skins. It slows digestion, improves satiety and is the easiest thing to add to an Indian plate.
- Ultra-processed food
- Packaged food built from industrial ingredients — refined flour snacks, sweetened drinks, instant noodles, most namkeen. We treat these as occasional rather than banned.
